daunting, but please DO come inside as so many others have before you.
An Insight into
Backstage work
So what do all the above jobs actually involve?? Here is an attempt at a little
clarification.
Acting - Learn your lines and then stand on stage, looking as if you know
why you are there.
Backstage - Each production requires one whole day of manic
action while you work out how the scenery goes together. Then the rest of
the week can be devoted to laughing at actors who can't remember why they
are there.
Choreography - Its such fun to think up movements that will
expose the casts lack of co-ordination. If anyone shows signs of getting
it right, be sure to have some major changes you can make at the last minute.
Designing Sets - Interested in styles, fashions, colours
and interior design? Draw lovely pictures that the set builders have not a
hope of recreating with mere poster paint, timber and canvas.
Director - Your chance to boss everyone else around and throw the
odd tantrum. Biggest tasks are finding a production manager and spending
your nights
awake in bed worrying.
Front of House - Simply turn up 30 mins before the performance in
your best clothes and smile at the audience when they arrive. We might
remember to thank you for your support if you are really good!
Van Driver - Wow! Would be really great to have one of these!!
Props - Blue Peter kids apply here. A great excuse to
visit all the junk shops and pound shops in Reading. Often gets to play
with glue, to snoop round other peoples houses and search e-bay. Can sometimes be a
real test of initiative!
Production Manager - You get to do all the legwork while the
Director takes the glory. Suitable for a compulsive organiser.
Programme Design - Good at computer graphics, word processing and
an eye for layout? Then this ones for you. When the cast forget to give
you their biographies, you get to make it up!
Refreshments - Like Front of House, but you arrive later and are
allowed to chat.
Set Building - Hours of fun with bits of wood and poster paints.
Ensure that everything you make is just too big to fit out through the door.
Social Secretary - One long party!!
Wardrobe - Like props but you visit the charity shops instead.
Its social, its addictive, its fun. Join us!
